a pioneering research initiative committed to exposing, analyzing, and improving housing justice across North American cities.
Our goal is capacity building, knowledge mobilization, and policy advocacy.
Our work is rooted in a community development perspective, focusing on understanding needs and visions for effective housing solutions.
We aim to create a more equitable housing landscape by understanding and addressing the unique challenges faced by racialized communities.
the Housing Justice Lab expands upon three critical initiatives.
Racial Equity and Anti-Displacement Initiative (READI)
READI is a research and advocacy initiative dedicated to examining and addressing the systemic factors that contribute to the displacement of racialized households in the Greater Toronto Area. Through research and advocacy, READI seeks to understand the root causes of eviction and displacement while developing strategies to protect vulnerable communities. The initiative focuses on collaborating with local organizations, policymakers, and affected residents to create equitable solutions that prevent displacement and promote stable, inclusive neighborhoods. By centering the experiences of those most at risk, READI aims to influence policy changes that ensure housing justice for all.
Ensuring Quality Urban Affordable Living Initiative (EQUALI)
EQUALI is a research initiative centered on understanding and enhancing residential experiences within social housing developments across North America. By investigating the lived experiences of residents, EQUALI aims to uncover the factors that contribute to quality, satisfaction, and well-being in affordable housing settings. Through qualitative and quantitative research, the initiative seeks to identify best practices in housing design, management, and community engagement to foster a sense of belonging and stability. EQUALI's findings are intended to inform policymakers and housing providers, helping to shape more equitable and supportive urban living environments that truly meet the needs of their residents.
Fostering Reparative Equity for Empowered Living Initiatives (FREELI)
FREELI is a visionary initiative that reimagines property ownership and social relations, unlocking the potential for true liberation and equity in our communities. Through innovative reparative policies, FREELI redefines housing by prioritizing collective ownership models, cooperative housing arrangements, and community land trusts. This transformative approach not only addresses historical injustices but also empowers residents to co-create thriving, inclusive neighborhoods. By fostering environments where everyone can freely access and share in the wealth of their community, FREELI paves the way for a future rooted in justice, solidarity, and sustainable prosperity.
